Born in Doha in 1956, Ali Hassan is one of Qatar’s most celebrated artists. He began training as a calligrapher in 1972 while working for local newspapers and earned a ba in history from Qatar University in 1982. He later studied at the University of Leuven (1984) and in graphic arts in Cairo (1986). For over five decades, he has explored the arabic letter nūn, creating works ranging from traditional calligraphy to sculpture and installation art. His work has been exhibited internationally, including in Tokyo, Zurich, Paris, and New York, and is held in major museum collections. Hassan received the state encouragement award in fine arts (2005), was honored by the gcc general secretariat (2013), and appointed fine arts expert by the ministry of justice (2021).
