Born in 1952 in behera, Egypt, adel el siwi studied medicine at Cairo University (1970–1976) while simultaneously pursuing independent study at the faculty of fine arts (1974–1975). In 1980, he relocated to Milan, italy, where he lived and worked for a decade before returning to Cairo. El Siwi has had numerous solo shows at venues including Mashrabia Gallery, Cairo; Épreuve d’Artiste, Beirut (1993); Accademia d’Egitto, Rome (1996); Artspace, Dubai; and galerie inception, paris (2012). He participated in the Venice Biennale (1997, 2009), Cairo Biennale (1996, 2008), and Sharjah Biennial (1997). His work is held in collections at the Museum of Modern Art Cairo, British Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and Mathaf. He has also translated art historical texts by Leonardo Da Vinci and Paul Klee into arabic.
