Wafika Sultan is a pioneering qatari artist and among the first women in qatar to study and practice art. She earned a bachelor’s degree in applied arts from Helwan University in 1974 and co-founded the qatari fine arts association in 1980. Her practice, rooted in contemporary symbolism, explores the dialogue between tradition and modernity through references to qatari folklore, proverbs, and women’s cultural presence, she creates narratives that highlight identity and heritage. Sultan has exhibited widely in qatar, with notable shows including neighbours of the sea at the fire station (2024), the qatari fine art exhibition (2023–2024), and i have stories at alhosh gallery (2020). Earlier exhibitions include Al Markhiya gallery (2017), the Qatar fine arts society (2014), gallery Al Riwaq (2012), and Mathaf (2011).
