About

Born in 1951 in M’chatt El-Milia, Algeria, since the late 1970s, Salim Le Kouaghet has explored connections between abstraction, memory, and language. His work emerges from a laceration, with Alif as a central motif at the intersection of the private and the sacred, serving as a spiritual axis adorned with Berber patterns. His square canvases evoke Wasted-Dar, embodying fragments of history. A winner of the Prix des Beaux-Arts and the Prix du Salon de Montrouge, encouraged by Zao Wou-Ki, he made history as the first artist to exhibit at the Grande Mosquée de Paris. A retrospective in 2026 will celebrate his career at the Centre de Création Contemporaine in Château-Thierry. His works are held in collections including Centre Pompidou, CNAP, and FRAC Île-de-France. He has exhibited in France, England, the Abu Dhabi Art Fair, and beyond.
