Born in Oran in 1952, Mersali is a graduate of the Oran School of Fine Arts, then the Higher School of Algiers, where he attended the workshop of the master Mesli. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. A professor at the Oran School of Fine Arts since 1982, he exiled himself in 1992 to Argenteuil, near Paris, where he lives and paints. His work, often in acrylic, explores scenes from everyday life in Oran — Souk el Kettane, the lower quarters, the new city — in a semi-figurative and impressionist style. Inspired by Monet, Renoir, and Manet, Mersali stands out for his vibrant palette and generous brushstrokes. He has also created works for theater and exhibited in Algeria and abroad.
