About

Hamid Zénati (1944, Constantine – 2022, Munich) was a self-taught German-Algerian artist with a unique path. Settling in Germany in the 1960s, he developed a rich universe of repetitive patterns, vibrant colors, and organic forms. Exploring textiles, painting, design, ceramics, glass, and wood, he embraced a free aesthetic influenced by North African ornamental traditions, psychedelic influences, and elements of Japanese modernity. Long marginalized, he lived between Algeria and Germany. His work, now re-evaluated, is praised for its joyful anarchy and formal radicalism. Exhibited at Haus der Kunst and Nottingham Contemporary, he is featured in exhibitions in Marseille (2023), Munich, and Tunis at the Kamel Lazaar Foundation (2024), as well as at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt (2024–25).
