About

Mamady Seydy makes the proverb the cornerstone of his artistic practice. Trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Dakar in the Visual Communication Department, he first developed a sculptural practice deeply rooted in Senegalese culture and the rich oral heritage of his ancestors. Immersed from childhood in the Wolof language and its accompanying traditions, Seydy draws from the universe of proverbs—concise and evocative expressions that combine wisdom and philosophy. He does not merely transcribe them; he reinvents, reformulates, and enriches them, translating their essence into a rich visual and symbolic language. Through hybrid figures in which the animal often takes center stage, his creations, positioned between the imaginary and the tangible, become powerful metaphors for human struggles and societal challenges.
